Scientist Peyton Westlake is working on a project to create synthetic skin. Now the skin he has developed has a flaw–it will not remain stable for more than 99 minutes. His girlfriend, Julie, a lawyer is investigating a developer. She leaves some incriminating documents at Peyton's. One night Peyton was working when the lights in his lab went out, he then discovers that the synthetic skin has remained stable past 99 minutes, he deduces that it's because of light that the skin doesn't remain stable. And it is at that moment that a psychotic criminal, Robert Durant appears demanding the documents that Julie left there. They beat up Peyton, and after finding the documents they blow up Peyton's lab. Peyton was blown away and everybody believes he is dead but in reality, he was found, burned seriously and a new procedure was performed on him that renders him unable to sense pain, he also now has tremendous strength and is now prone to violent outbursts. He is now working on perfecting the synthetic skin and at the same using his technology to make synthetic skin masks of the men who attacked him so that he could strike back at them.
Peyton Westlake is a scientist who has discovered a way to produce synthetic skin. This could revolutionise skin grafting, except for one minor glitch; the synthetic skin degrades after 100 minutes of exposure to light. When gangsters attack Peyton, he is horrifically burnt, and assumed dead. In his quest for revenge, Peyton, aka the Darkman, is able to take on the appearance of anyone (using the synthetic skin,) but he only has 100 minutes per disguise.
Darkman is one of the most unusual superheroes out there. He doesn't have a moral code about not killing, he isn't driven by some sort of guilt but instead by revenge, and he doesn't even wear a costume when he's fighting crime. With that, comes an even more unusual superhero film. But is that a good or bad thing, let's find out!

The origin of Darkman is that of a scientist named Peyton Westlake(Liam Neeson) who is working on a fake skin replica which is successful, but can only last up to 99 minutes when it's used with light. He nearly gets murdered in a bomb blast when his girlfriend discovers a document incriminating Louis Strack but gets saved in an experiment where he loses his sense of physical pain but heightens his emotional pain. Angered, he goes on a revenge mission against the people who tried to kill him using his fake skin replicas to disguise as them to make them to take each other out.

This movie is unusual for a superhero movie because it borrows a lot from 1930's Universal horror films and pulp comics of the same time. Most superhero movies today try to make you believe that this is the real world but in Darkman, this world feels like a more modern version of the 30s with a lot of mob stuff going on and that's refreshing. This movie was also directed by Sam Raimi who was a still a B-movie director at the time, making films like The Evil Dead and Army of Darkness around this time. With that, this movie feels a lot more over-the-top than most superhero movies today and I think this is one of the biggest problems with this movie. It's trying to be all tragic with Peyton becoming a monster as he's killing the bad guys but at the same time, we have all these over-the-top death scenes that feel like they belong in a horror- comedy film instead. It's entertaining, but it feels out of place.

I like the drama this movie presents with Peyton becoming a monster as he's killing the bad guys. It feels very much like a classic horror film from the 30's, it's great! I also like the fact that this movie doesn't really portray Peyton as a hero. Sure, he kills bad guy but every time he does it, it's for himself so it's kinda ambiguous whether or not Peyton really is a hero. It's up for you to decide. It's surprising how well-nuanced this film is considering that Raimi had only made B-movies before this.

The acting is mostly pretty good. Liam Neeson is really awesome in this movie! I love how over-the-top he gets but still manages to be sympathetic and tragic. It's pretty refreshing to see a movie where Neeson acts over-the-top for once. Francis McDormand is relatively likable as Peyton's girlfriend. But Colin Friels is really bland and forgettable here and I wish Larry Strack was the main villain instead because he's just so much more memorable. There's also a Bruce Campbell cameo in here that is sure to please any hardcore Sam Raimi fans!

Some other stuff I like is the camera-work. Sam Raimi is a master behind the camera and it shows here because all the scenes are shot very creatively and it's great. The action scenes are very well-done and clever, the makeup on Peyton's face is wonderfully-grotesque, and I think this movie is a lot of fun!

Overall, it's not perfect but it has some nice nuances in there and it's a lot of fun I'll recommend it to any horror-comedy fans or just people who are looking for a different type of superhero movie. I'm gonna give it a 7/10.
I saw this movie on the Sci Fi channel and I was pleasently surprised. Liam Neeson gave a solid performance as a hideously scarred and mentally unstable scientist seeking revenge on the drug dealer who made him that way by using technology to disguise his face for 99 minutes. The whole movie has a cool, comic book style to it and cool special effects. The action scenes near the end, with the helicopter was really cool.
Darkman is big, stupid and wonderful – an absurd, grand-scale adventure and a vicious comedy rolled into one nasty, unpleasant, hard-to-resist mess. [24 Aug. 1990, p.E1]
According to Bruce himself at a UK convention in March 2008, he was never down for the role. He did confirm however that he supplied much of the voice work. The European DVD has a small cut due to it being distributed in the UK, where the BBFC used to have a problem with the depiction of certain Asian weapons in movies. It is hard to say. There is a shot that establishes where the line is and shows that Westlake is already standing very close to it when he gets there, so it is possible that he crossed it on the last throw when he knocked the bottles down and not realized it. If Westlake was paying attention, the fact that he is so certain that he did not cross the line would set the interpretation that the guy at the stand really was trying to cheat him. While both interpretations involve the aspect of his inability to control his temper making Westlake/Darkman more unpredictable, dangerous and susceptible to violence; only the one in which the guy actually cheated Westlake would involve him getting what he deserves when Westlake beats him up. Bottom line, if you want to believe that the scene's only purpose was to put further focus on Westlake's growing instability, then he did cross the line (though either way, the underlying meaning is there). But if you want to believe that the guy was being an unfair jerk, you'll say Westlake was behind the line.
